Where to begin when you choose a colour for the outside of your building. You’ve transformed your space into your dream pad but what is the right colour for the outside? Here are some points to consider:

Consider your surroundings Do look at your surroundings, whether you have a detached or terraced property, the immediate vicinity needs to be considered. If you are near greenery, trees as in a rural location then having colours that will subtly tone in with the landscape is an option. Alternatively choosing a more dramatic option without upsetting the balance of your surroundings is important (and your neighbours too!) If you live in an urban area neighbouring houses, shops and other businesses is an important factor when choosing your colour scheme. In addition focus on the important elements that are unlikely to change such as windows and possibly doors. A striking colour for your door can help bring curb appeal but it is important to ensure that any colour you choose will compliment the facade.   Trust your instincts When looking at colour go with your gut, if you feel a certain palette is too strong then look at ways of toning things down. Trying testers is essential for any outdoor scheme, try painting areas on the gables, beside the windows and beside features such as plaster mouldings. Colours that appear bold initially in a smaller swatch will take on a softer appearance on a larger scale. So don’t be afraid to go for an injection of colour. When you try a variety of options a scheme will start to develop that you will feel happy with, remember it doesn’t have to be complicated. Buildings can work very well with schemes of 2-3 colours, indeed some of the more successful schemes can work with just 1 or 2. Experiment, apply the testers and make an informed choice, you will be surprised what options you will come up with. Create a cohesive scheme Ensure that the colour for your exterior will flow and set the tone for the interior. Once you establish kerb appeal outside it can be a great starting point for what’s concealed inside. Make it inviting and be a bookmark for your own sense of style
